Our Mission

Our mission is to create a transitional sanctuary for female victims of domestic abuse in a way that enables them, with their children, horses, livestock, and pets to escape the abuse and develop a plan to move forward with their lives.

Our Vision

We envision this to be in a ranch setting with individual units where pets, horses and other animals can reside with their human family as intact as possible.

Additionally, it is our vision to increase awareness of the link between human and animal abuse and take appropriate steps to protect its victims .

The primary mission of Littlegrass Ranch is to provide transitional housing for victims of domestic violence and their pets. This includes horses and livestock that the victim has an emotional attachment to, and does not feel can be left in an abusive situation. Because there are many different species that share our lives, it is our goal to include as many species of those companion animals as possible, so no one needs to stay in an abusive relationship because they cannot take their pets when they have to leave.

Our mission is primarily to provide housing and stabling for horse women. Women from any place in the United States are eligible for our program. We are not government funded and strongly support and uphold the rights of any individual to observe his/her religious beliefs as long as they do not endanger another person or an animal. Littlegrass Ranch does not discriminate on the basis of age, race or religion. Our program, however, is for women only.

WHAT IS "LITTLEGRASS"?

At the time the French and Spanish were exploring south Louisiana, there were two and a half million acres of coastal prairie. Most of the marshy areas were covered with thick rushes that did well in the brackish water---great for crabs and alligators, but not so good for people and horses.

When an area of sweet, fine-bladed "littlegrass" was discovered, it not only signified good grazing for the horses, but also the availability of fresh water for the travelers, and possibly a good place to camp. Such a place ia Little Grass Marais in the Atchafalaya Swamp of south Louisiana.

The analogy of finding sweet grass and fresh water for women and horses needing shelter and nourishment expresses the true spirit of Littlegrass Ranch.
